Yes, and the Greens think we should all cycle or take the bus: fat chance!

The Charge Place Scotland needs to be better constituted and organised. At present the contract (let by Transport Scotland) is allowing a very sub-standard service to develop. The back office software is poor and it transpires that the users are not being presented with anything more than basic usage information. Whilst this is useful for knowing energy supplied, it is completely useless at tracking faults. As a result the call handling agents are in the dark and resort to making things up to assuage the customer.

It seems that Transport Scotland have little or no control over the operations of the service they have contracted the operator to supply. The contract is up for renewal or re-tendering and it is essential that we, the users, at least have sight of the contract specification BEFORE it is tendered and have an opportunity to help ensure it is fit for OUR purpose. I fear we are being held away from this as we will be critical of the poor levels of availability and inadequate fault handling. However it is only through having access to decent management information that we can hope to hold them to account for a better service.

Building on noahs-dad comment earlier that "only about 5 people in Scotland can repair public chargers":

Would it be worth EVAS' while to push Transport Scotland to work on a scheme training young apprentices/electrical students specifically in chargepoint repair? With emphasis on getting a good number of suitably trained individuals across the country so as to reduce repair times. It is clearly a growing industry and would do young electricians' career prospects the world of good to be given formal training in this. It would also help to move us on from having to rely on a tiny number of electricians and companies to deliver all chargepoint repairs.

The scheme is already in development.
Edinburgh College took an early lead and we had a meeting with them and Transport Scotland on the subject in the last month. Not yet much to report, but there is momentum building.

eVolt have the largest fleet of points in Scotland, but a single figure sized maintenance team. This can be seen as reflecting the workload. The training has the potential to open up AC charge point repair, but each #JourneyCharger manufacturer will have their own programme of accreditation for DC work.
If the points are reliable, the requirement for a large repair squad will diminish, with a possible impact on repair times. The way round that is higher support costs, which someone would then have to foot the bill for.

Some manufacturers do however need to up their basic game somewhat and recognise that the product has their name (and reputation) on it.
